“Therefore, my beloved brethren be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
Sturgeon Valley Baptist Church, St. Albert, Alberta is a living witness to the concern of Christians living here to minister to the s1piritual needs of their community. McKernan Baptist Church, through its pastor, Don Richter, provided the initial impetus to establish a Baptist and evangelical witness. The initial meeting was called in November, 1975 in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Albrecht. The same month St. Albert was adopted as a church extension project of the ABA (Alberta Baptist Association), with denominational approval given on February 21, 1976.
Sponsoring Church
In January 1976, McKernan Baptist Church of Edmonton adopted this work and became the “mother” or sponsoring church. The assistant pastor, Len Johnson, was released to lead Bible studies once a week, as well as Sunday services to the end of June. January through March Bible studies were held in various homes.
First Service
The Sunday services began April 4, 1976. Paul Kane High School was secured for these times of worship and instruction. Mr. Larry Hannah provided direction in getting the Sunday School started. The first Sunday 79 people attended!

Affiliation
Sturgeon Valley Baptist Church was a church extension project of the Alberta Baptist Association of the North American Baptist Conference. As an extension church, we received financial support from the international office at Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois as well as from the Alberta Baptist Association. The recognition council which met on March 6, 1978 recommended that we be admitted to full membership in the ABA. This became official at the ABA annual meeting held in Medicine Hat, April 6–9, 1978. We were encouraged by prayer and the financial support of our sister churches.
Building
We purchased 1.94 acres in Woodlands in June, 1980 and began to dream in January, 1982 as to the kind of building we needed for our ministry. Construction was to begin in May. Then came delays. With interest rates over 20%, we decided to delay construction to 1983. We then went to the North American Baptist Conference Church Extension Investor’s Fund and presented our needs to sister churches. We got our loan. The financial commitment of this congregation made a start possible.
Construction of Phase I began May, 1983. We were in the building by December 4, 1983. The dedication service took place on February 12, 1984 with guest speaker Rev. Don Richter. It was an emotional and spiritual highlight with 650 persons attending.
At our congregational meeting in June 1998, we committed ourselves, as a congregation, to plan for phase two of our building program.
