The baptism of Jesus is one of the most familiar scenes in the Gospels: Jesus enters the Jordan, the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven. But beneath this familiar story are details that are easy to overlook.
Each Gospel tells the story from a slightly different perspective, drawing our attention to particular words, actions, and images. Taken together, these details invite us to look more closely at what was really happening at the Jordan—and especially at the role of the Holy Spirit in this pivotal moment in the life and ministry of Christ.
