The world has a lot of history when it comes to women and their roles in society.
This passage has been used as a club in the past to knock women down, and to abuse them in their roles in the family.

After teaching this passage dozens of times, I have come to a conclusion that is not a traditional view on this passage (depending on the tradition I suppose). The traditional view is that wives must submit to their husbands, and husbands are to lovingly rule over them...
